Then it’s on to the Gilles Centre which is the setting for this journey. Blessed with gentle weather, I am joined by sixteen willing bodies who bought their minds, lunch and clutter with them to get on with the journey.
The wooden floor, the high windows, the heaters and the crucifix (It is a centre of Christian hospitality) and wall hangings at the end of the room together with the music drifting out into the lobby and the simple table installation of fresh flowers and candles on a white ground and of course Barbara, who welcome us into the space. One by one we enter, connecting and reconnecting, finding many friends of previous dance workshops, I feel like I am home, it certainly feels nourishing and familiar.
Wave after wave was danced as we landed, finding and meeting our fellow dancers along the way, finding our body parts and in my case awareness of some locked up emotions and pains in my knees and feet, wow that was a surprise and so soon but hey ho now I can acknowledge it and release it. Time for a one to one to check in how we are doing physically, mentally and emotionally, I was already in touch with my emotions and it was not even lunch time. WOW. Perfect. This was followed by a gathering circle of name intros and quite by surprise Bella arrives. Bella is the name which came in to give to my 3year old at a five rhythms retreat last New Year in Spain but who till now has rarely been introduced, although I meet with her regularly. So it seems that I am up for a new adventure with my child self, Yummie. Its now lunchtime when with a flourish Kate floats a white linen cloth on the centre of the floor and the banquet of offerings were bought from the kitchen and laid there for all to share, such abundance. More sharing and connecting with the other hungry dancers, then Barbara is on the ball to ensure its just an hour which is all too soon, so chatter gets interrupted to make sure that it’s time to dance again.
Then afternoon starts with a short wave then we come into a circle where we bring our pieces which represent our soul and share them with the group as an introduction of ourselves, deep sharing was there immediately, gosh, we must feel safely held thanks to Barbara’s skill. Just time to dive into a satin bag of goodies where we find a gem and this is the clue to who else will support us on the journey, four groups of four. I chose green and I am blessed to be joined by John, Mags and Gail. Then it’s time to move, this time to ‘do the practice’ travelling thro the space alone or with another travelling thro the elements of flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness, more learning and unfolding from not being able to get onto my feet to being completely wrapped up in a passion filled connection with another dancer and onto being with the breath and in reflection – ohhh I love the practice. Straight from this into creativity when we get busy with magazines, scissors and glue to create an A2 pictorial of what is speaking to us in this moment. No agenda or brief, just what jumps off the pages at you just 25mins so get busy. Then 15mins to review images stick them down and see what has spoken. Time for one more short wave to land our vision then all too soon it was 5.30 and time to relax for the evening. A very rich first day of yumminess.
Off to dinner at Henderson’s Edinburgh’s first vegetarian restaurant with Joanie and Eric, both of whom I last danced with on the isle of Mull in July, good food, great company and revealing deep conversation which can come from deep connections made on the dance floor.
Time to head home with Joanie, a lovely hot shower and then to bed with the curtains open wide to the sea, the window open which means I can finish the first day of the journey drifting off to sleep with the lapping of the waves before dreamtime visits.
